Photoionization and Electron–Ion Recombination in Astrophysical Plasmas

نویسندگان

چکیده

Photoionization and its inverse, electron–ion recombination, are key processes that influence many astrophysical plasmas (and gasses), the diagnostics we use to analyze plasmas. In this review provide a brief overview of importance photoionization recombination in astrophysics. We highlight how data needed for spectral analyses, required accuracy, varies considerably different environments. then discuss processes, highlighting resonances their cross-sections. Next radiative low high temperature dielectronic recombination. The possible suppression (LTDR) (HTDR) due radiation field densities is discussed. Finally few examples processes.

Photoionization and Recombination

Theoretically self-consistent calculations for photoionization and (e + ion) recombination are described. An identical eigenfunction expansion for the ion is employed in coupled channel calculations for both processes, thus ensuring consistently accurate cross sections and rates in an ab initio manner. The theoretical treatment of (e + ion) recombination subsumes both the non-resonant recombina...

Hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, and astrophysical plasmas

1 Introduction It is not uncommon to encounter the assertion that the dynamical evolution of the large-scale bulk velocity v of a collisionless gas is not described by the hydrodynamic (HD) equations. A favorite " reason " is the statement that pressure cannot be defined in the absence of collisions. Then in some quarters it is believed that the large-scale bulk dynamics of a swirling magnetize...

Radiative Recombination and Photoionization Data for Tungsten Ions. Electron Structure of Ions in Plasmas

Theoretical studies of tungsten ions in plasmas are presented. New calculations of the radiative recombination and photoionization cross-sections, as well as radiative recombination and radiated power loss rate coefficients have been performed for 54 tungsten ions for the range W–W. The data are of importance for fusion investigations at the reactor ITER, as well as devices ASDEX Upgrade and EB...

Radiative recombination and photoionization cross sections for heavy element impurities in plasmas

We have performed fully relativistic Dirac–Fock calculations of total cross sections for radiative recombination of heavy element impurities with electrons and subshell photoionization cross sections for 31 ions of Fe, Ni, Cu, Mo, and W, which are important elements in plasma studies. The electron kinetic energy range is 4 eV to 50 keV. To obtain the total radiative recombination cross section,...

Magnetic Reconnection in Astrophysical and Laboratory Plasmas

Magnetic reconnection is a topological rearrangement of magnetic field that converts magnetic energy to plasma energy. Astrophysical flares, from the Earth’s magnetosphere to γ -ray bursts and sawtooth crashes in laboratory plasmas, may all be powered by reconnection. Reconnection is essential for dynamos and the large-scale restructuring known as magnetic self-organization. We review reconnect...
